In-store Communication Tips
Point of Sale (POS) Quick Wins:
- carrier bags/bags for life
- Wine carriers
- Till dividers or till monitor displays
Making retailer recycling communications and messaging in-store have more impact:
- Retailer Involvement: Consumers receptive but messages need to be credible, believable and preferably integrated into the fabric of the store environment
- Awareness: POS needs to make a impact, and impact is greater when the campaign colours contrasted with the supermarket corporate colours
- Creative message media: Message needs to be
- on packaging
- at till-points and other ‘browse’ areas
- on trolleys and baskets
Store browse areas:
- Wall space behind the till area and in-store café’s are good browse areas for customers to pick up information on recycling in their area.
- Try teaming up with the local recycling officer to display recycling targets, and who will benefit, such as a community project. This will inspire and motivate customers to recycle for their community benefit.
Trolley ideas:
- Trolley displays can demonstrate the ‘what packaging can be recycled’ concept. Simply fill a trolley (or more) with empty, clean packaging from selected products sold at your stores for which there are good local recycling facilities. The idea is to demonstrate that this packaging from own brand and other branded products can be readily recycled and gives the customer the chance to see at a glance the packaging materials that can be recycled at home or at your store.
- Trolley displays can show materials that can and can’t be recycled in your area. In this case, a trolley labelled with ‘YES - recycle’ can be set up alongside a second trolley with ‘NO – can’t recycle here’ to show at a glance what can and can’t be recycled. This will help identify commonly excluded items such as yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, and provides a level of interest to customers who maybe confused and can have their queries answered. Invite local recycling officers to be present to be able to help out with materials which constitute contamination.
- The trolleys allow for the displays to be moved between store browsing areas to capture different customer groups and for ease of mobility from bottle neck areas.
In-store TV monitors:
- Some retailers are already obtaining good results with their store TV advertising and communications. It can promote your socially responsible activities and messages with clips featuring store recycling practices both behind the scenes as well as front of store recycling communications and packaging minimisation initiatives.
- Use the Recycle Now TV advertisement on the in-store monitors
