Recycle Week Rewards for schools

What’s involved?

Across the country we are asking schools to take part in Recycle Week. This year the focus of this national event is on recycling waste electrical items and we’d like your help to encourage your local community to recycle these items by gathering recycling pledges prior to Recycle Week.

Every time someone recycles a small electrical item at a participating recycling point during Recycle Week they will receive a token with a unique code. These tokens can be awarded to your school online by the recycler (though some people may want to bring their tokens to you to register on their behalf). The schools with the most tokens in each region will win prizes of £500 worth of garden centre vouchers. There will also be national prizes of £1000 worth of garden centre vouchers for the primary and secondary school with the most tokens overall.

To make taking part as meaningful and fun as possible, participating schools will also be able to access a great range of free promotional and teaching materials.

The Steps:

Step 1: Sign up to take part and order free Recycle Week materials by 21st May

If you have received an inviation to take part in recycle week from your local council your school is eligible to take part in the Recycle Week Rewards for Schools Scheme.

You can now register your school’s participation using this simple online form {LINK}. Once you have registered, you will then be invited to order free promotional materials which will help to let your local community know that you are taking part in Recycle Week and collecting reward tokens. You can display free Recycle Week posters and banners outside your school and involve pupils in gathering pledges to recycle from the local community using the “Recycle Week leaflet with pledge slip”. Free pupil prizes are also available to order to reward pupils for their efforts in gathering pledges.

When ordering pledge leaflets, please think about how many pupils will be involved in gathering pledges and how many people each pupil is likely to gather pledges from to ensure you order sufficient quantities.

Step 2: Download assembly materials and pupil activities and plan when you will use them

These materials are free for participating schools to download. We suggest that you use our Recycle Week assembly powerpoint prior to Recycle Week to tell staff and pupils what the week is all about and how they can get involved. Our fun activity sheets are also intended to help bring Recycle week into the classroom.  You might want to use these materials with one year group or with the whole school.

Step 3: Recycle Week materials will be delivered to your school by 28th May

As materials will be delivered before half term, we hope this will give you sufficient time to use these promotional materials to engage with your local community prior to Recycle Week.

Step 4: Pupils gather recycling pledges from the local community before 18th June

We’d like your pupils to get involved with engaging your local community by gathering pledges from the adults they know to recycle their waste electrical items during Recycle Week.

The pledge slips are attached to Recycle Week leaflets which explain how to recycle waste electrical items locally and why it’s important to recycle them. (see “Step 2” for information on ordering free leaflets). These leaflets should be left with those making a pledge and the simple pledge slip can be retained by the pupil collecting the pledge.

The completed pledge slips should be brought back to school as the free pupil rewards you order will be given out based on these. There is no requirement to send these pledge forms to us and how you manage the distribution of prizes for pledges within your schools is up to you and will depend on available time and resources.  Our suggestion is that you introduce a competition element in secondary schools, so that the 3 pupils who collect the most pledges will win the music download prizes. There will therefore be a requirement to count pledge slips. In primary schools you might want to reward all pupils bringing completed pledge slips into school with a recycling hero badge.
Depending on the time you have available you might want to incorporate the collected pledge slips pupils have gathered into a lesson e.g. maths.

To give people enough time to dig out their old electricals and follow through their pledge we would ask that pupils gather pledges before 18th June.

Step 5: Members of the local community receive Reward Tokens for recycling their old electrical items at participating recycling points between 21st - 27th June

When members of your local community follow through their pledge and recycle their old electricals at a participating recycling point during Recycle Week they will receive a Reward Token. This token can be used to beneift your school.

Step 6: Reward tokens are registered online by individual recyclers, or by your school by 16th July

Each token has a unique identification code which needs to be registered online (using the URL printed on the token). This is a very quick and easy process; but some token holders (e.g. those without internet access) may wish to bring the token to your school to register.

Step 7: Winners will be announced week commencing 19th July

The schools with the most Rewards per pupil head in each region will win prizes of £500 worth of garden centre vouchers. The primary and secondary school with the most Rewards overall will win prizes of £1000 of garden centre vouchers.
