Cool Bag

Blue Skies and Balmy Evenings

Its a well known fact that everything tastes better in the open air, so now that summer is here its time to start eating alfresco again.

Outdoor eating comes in all shapes and sizes, from traditional English picnics to delightfully messy children’s parties, or a Mediterranean sprawl beneath the sun. Keeping all this food and drink fresh and cool in the warm summer weather is the real challenge.

In the UK we are guilty of throwing away nearly half of the salad we buy. Every day we also manage to throw out nearly 1 million slices of ham, 1.2 million sausages and nearly 3 million tomatoes. Not to mention 300,000 unopened packets of crisps.

The Love Food Hate Waste summer feature focuses on outdoor eating. Whether its food on the move or cooking for a crowd we have sizzling summer recipe tips and cool storage ideas to ensure everyone can make the most of their food this summer.

Take a look at Love Food Hate Waste Partners for summer resources to use in your own Love Food Hate Waste campaigns.

Kent

Campaign Success with Local Businesses

Have you considered creating a partnership with local businesses to promote your campaigns?

Kent Waste Partnership has been working with the largest employers in their area as part of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign they are running. Kent approached the companies' media departments and arranged to hold a 'special week', which included putting Love Food Hate Waste leaflets, posters and branded artwork on their intranets and in newsletters to raise the awareness of the campaign with staff. At the end of the 'week' the team spent the day at the company, talking to employees at break and lunch times. One canteen also featured Love Food Hate Waste recipes to give employees a practical demonstration of the campaign. The results of the overall campaign will be released later this year.

If you would like to run something similar in your area, campaign resources are freely available on Love Food Hate Waste Partners and the events cost very little other than staff time.

Why not try it in your area and get your campaign message to thousands of people too?

BBC Summer Festival Fridge

Love Food Hate Waste at the BBC Summer Festival

June brought the BBC Summer Festival to the Birmingham NEC.

Love Food Hate Waste and our iconic fridge attracted crowds of people to the Sustainable Future Feature, all keen to know how they can reduce their food waste. Love Food Hate Waste advisors were on hand to provide people with handy tips and easy practical advice to help them waste less food.

Our food storage quiz to 'Win a Food Rescue Pack' was a great success, with over 1,500 entries. Questions such as 'Can you store cheese in the freezer?' and 'What's the difference between Best Before and Use By dates?' proved a real talking point, and got people questioning their own food storage habits.

The Food Rescue Packs, containing 10 useful kitchen tools to help keep food fresher for longer, are now on their way to the 25 lucky winners!

If you are interested in running a similar competion, contact us for a copy of our quiz and competition entry form.
