Recycle Week 2008 logo

Recycle Week hailed a success...

Wow, Recycle Week 08 was our busiest to date with a reported 300 events happening across the country. At a national level over two million copies of recycling guide "How you can make a difference" was distributed in the Mail on Sunday's YOU magazine.

Early indications are:

  • The BBC Local Radio initiative was excellent and it helped to secure great regional coverage
  • The posters were very popular
  • Recycle Week t-shirts were in high demand

Your feedback on Recycle Week is important to help us plan our resources for next year. Therefore a web-based survey is being prepared and we would like to invite you to take a couple of minutes to let us have your views. A link to the survey will appear in the Ezine at the end of July.

Finally, the Recycle Now team would like to thank you for contributing to a great Recycle Week. Read on to find out what else has been happening...

Angel of the North made from recycled coke cans

Recycle Week round up

In addition to all the fantastic events held by local authorities, some major brands and retailers took the opportunity to promote recycling too. Here is what they did...

Four iconic aluminium sculptures made out of Coke cans were commissioned by Coca Cola to mark the start of Recycle Week. The Angel of the North, A Bull (as in the Bull Ring - Birmingham), Big Ben and the Clifton Suspension Bridge captured the imagination of the public and are now on display or on tour in the local areas. If you didn't see them, take a look at the photos on Recycle Now

During Recycle Week, BRITA promoted their in-store water filter cartridge-recycling scheme. Customers can now return their used BRITA cartridges, which are 100% recyclable, to selected stores for recycling. The scheme is operating in stores across the country including Tesco, Argos, Robert Dyas and Cargo.

In TK Maxx stores, all single use plastic bags were removed from the checkouts and shoppers were encouraged to use specially designed 'bags for life' instead.

Repeating this theme and following on from a recent trial, the removal of single use carrier bags was extended to all of ASDA's 355 stores.  A new 'bag for life' designed by Wayne Hemmingway was launched to support the initiative and all the point of sale during Recycle Week carried recycling messages. They also produced a new sustainable viral game called 'Landfill Bill' for their website and this has proved very successful going to No. 3 in the viral charts!

Recycle Week activity in Vale Royal - Green Butler

Green Butler success

Thanks for sending us your Recycle Week photos and letting us know how successful your events were.  We would love to feature some of them and we start in this edition with the ‘Green Butler’.

If you didn't spot this in the Recycle Week Event Guide, all that's needed is a recycling area and a bit of imagination! Add the green carpet treatment, a few balloons and enlist the help of a 'Green Butler' to help residents with their recycling and you have a simple and effective way to promote your local facilities.

The residents in Vale Royal were 'treated' to this service in Recycle Week and thought it was a great idea.

Do you have more great pictures to share with us? If so, send them to Jane.Hall@wrap.org.uk and we will use them if we can.

TetraPak inflatable carton available for local authorities to hire

Other resources for Local Authorities

Tetra Pak and the carton industry have worked with many Local Authorities to ensure residents are aware of local carton recycling facilities. This has been achieved through the creation of leaflets, posters, local press releases, a giant inflatable carton and 'on-shelf' information appearing in M&S stores across the UK.

Local authorities wishing to promote carton recycling further can contact tetrapak@fishburn-hedges.co.uk for a news release on the new Carton Recycling Pledge. Not only will people across the UK be reinforcing their commitment to recycle their cartons, but one lucky ‘pledgee’ will win the chance for Tetra Pak to help transform a local community green area of their Council’s choice, as well as a Nintendo Wii for themselves. You can also continue to order the inflatable carton for your summer events!

Northwich in Cheshire Annual Motorbike Race 2008

Where there's a crowd, there's a roadshow to be had!

Busy shopping areas are often the venue for Recycling Roadshows but have you considered other local events?

Northwich in Cheshire holds an annual motorbike race which over 100,000 people attend. The Recycle for Cheshire team decided to tailor their message to suit the audience and featured how cans are recycled into bike and car parts using the “possibilities are endless” message. Over one thousand motorbike kick stands made out of recycled plastic were handed out to the stand visitors.

So, why not take another look at the local events in your area and take the opportunity to spread the recycling message wherever you can.

Goran Ivanisevic at Liverpool Tennis Tournament - Recycle Week 2008

Anyone for tennis?

Liverpool's recycling scheme received welcomed support by none other than the ex Wimbledon champion, Goran Ivanisevic.

During Recycle Week, the ex champ visited the Liverpool tennis tournament where recycling bins were located around the venue and a Roadshow stand had been set up. During the day he met with local schoolchildren who were sporting their Recycle for Liverpool sweat wrist bands, water bottles and tennis balls!

Calling all local authorities...

Can you answer YES to any of these three questions?

  • Are you considering or introducing a new food waste collection scheme?
  • Are you a large Unitary Authority or Partnership of authorities considering a waste prevention strategy and/or communications campaign, including food waste reduction?
  • Is your 07/08 dry recycling rate (BVPI 82a) under twenty per cent, and/or your combined recycling rate (BVPI 82a & b) for 07/08 under thirty per cent?

If so, and you are not already working with our Local Government Services team (Rotate or Local Communications) we would particularly like to hear from you...

Our Local Authority Support Programme for England offers free operational, waste prevention and communications advice to help authorities improve their waste and recycling performance and reduce household waste. We are currently receiving and reviewing Requests for Support for 2008/9. The three categories above are our priorities for support, although the service is open to all authorities.

If you think you can benefit from our support please click here for details and complete the simple 'Request for Support' form. If you want to talk to one of the team about possible support first, please ring Alison Day on 01295 819 661
